White River Clean-up Event Facts & Photos
BE SURE TO JOIN US THIS YEAR AND SEE WHAT YOU FIND LOOKING IN THE RIVER!

|
Before the Clean-Water Act of 1972, the White River was basically an open sewer. Industry and private citizens saw the river as a way to dispose of their waste for free. Although we can still see remnants of that legacy, water quality has greatly improved. |
|
The river is still recovering from century of insults. The White River Watchers came together in 1997 for the purpose of restoring and protecting the White river throughout its watershed. Our first clean-up in the spring of 1998 at Edgewater Park resulted in the removal of hundreds of tires and tons of debris. |

Since that time, we have sponsored ten major clean-ups and many smaller ones. We have removed water heaters, kiddy pools, manhole covers, car seats, muffler, old washers and dryers, sunken boats, a stolen car, a bowling ball, a safe, helmet, bed springs, lumber, glass, unidentified car parts, battery casings, street signs, trash barrels, Styrofoam, plastic bottles, fishing line, nearly 4,000 tires, and many other artifacts of the 20th century. |
