MINUTES JAN 16,2004

Minutes:  The minutes for Nov. 17, 2003 and Dec. 18, 2003 were accepted as written. 

Treasurer’s Report:  The treasurer’s report was accepted.

ACS/DNR Project Wet:  The details are still being worked out.

Moss Island:  Only need signatures on “The dotted lines”, then the clean-up will begin.  There will be a surface clean-up and the White River will be cleaned ½ mile upstream and ½ mile downstream from the site.

Recycling Plan for Anderson:  The City of Anderson s ready to work with Madison County and the East Central Solid Waste District to begin a recycling program.  A motion was made, seconded and passed to allow $100 for Laura Albertson’s consultation services.

Goals for 2004:  Our mission statement is “To protect the White River ecosystem for the present and future use of all by means of community involvement and education.”

  • Education for board members
  • Clean-ups
  • Bank stabilization
  • Grants
  • Increase membership
  • Water Quality checks
  • Fun events

Wee will need funding, time volunteers and resources

  1. Bank stabilization:  We will need to consider sources of funding such as grant money, funding assistance from the city/county.  We may want to do our own survey.  Grants sources include the Fish and Wildlife Service, American Canoe Association, Madison community Foundation.  Further research is needed.
  2. Increase membership:  This can be done through clean-ups, using news media.  We need a contact person(s)/committee.
  3. Water quality monitoring:  Need dated, supplies and equipment.  Maybe we should have our own data base.
  4. Fun events:  These could include cook-outs, canoe trips, etc.

DATES

FEB:  Equipment calibrated, water quality, planning

MARCH:  Wilson’s Boy’s Club Go Fish Program Bank stabilization, Guest Speaker

APRIL: Earth Day/Arbor Day (April 24th), news letter mailed

MAY: DNR/ACS to be announced, plan June clean-up

JUNE:  Clean-up is on June 12th, schedule a rain-out date(?), news letter articles submitted

JULY: Jake’s Day to be announced

AUG:  Plan Sept. clean-up, fun activity

SEPT: Sept 11th is the clean-up, guest speaker, news letter articles submitted

OCT:  Nominations for officers, fun activity (invite volunteers/conservation kids)

NOV: elections, guest speaker, special topic

DEC: Christmas Party

Business meeting procedures:  Stick to the agenda, call Kim to be put on the agenda, e-mail requests in advance, as well as the minutes. 

Home Show:  Do we want to have a booth?

Education:  Need to plan Jake’s Day and the program at the Wilson’s Boy’s Club.  A motion was made, seconded and passed to spend $150/event to buy prizes and supplies  We need to have 10 board members present to have the DNR set up a workshop for the board members.. 

Water Quality:  We need an itemized list of supplies needed for water quality checks.  We should have them at least quarterly

New Items:

  • The conservation club has been rented for a canoe livery
  • Dick Fetty will be collecting personal hygiene items at the next two meetings for the Christian Rescue Mission
  • The fees for the web-site domain are due
  • We should consider a list-serv for mass mailings via the internet
  • We can buy a domain for five years
  • Helen Ween told about the city/county partnership for recycling.  Laura Albertson will advise.
  • On Feb 7th from 11 – 1:30 there will be education on frogs at Holliday Park.  This is on Spring Mill Rd.  It is the annual meeting of the Friends of the White River. 
  • We should consider buying stationary/business cards.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn the meeting.
