October 20, 2008

Minutes:  The minutes for the meeting of September 15,2008 were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:  We were billed for 2.78 tons of debris.  About 100 tires were removed from the river.  We used 50 canoes.  There was no charge for the bus.  The report was accepted.  The PO Box fees were paid.  John had to buy a tire for the trailer.

October 12 canoe-in:  The weather was beautiful.  Those that made the canoe-in picked up 15 tires to add to the 35 previously collected tires.  The cook out was enjoyed by all who attended.  Kevin made the recommendation to have another canoe-in.  We now have a deep water tire puller.

Chanda Hiatt – SWCD: 

*      Chanda introduced herself.  She is the new watershed coordinator for the SWCD.  She asked for input and concerns from the WRW. 

*      Concerns included habitat destruction, need to improve water quality.  The WRW also indicated economic and educational concerns.

*      Crist informed her Geist needs to help with the watershed alliance.

*      Brad Newman informed her of the log jams throughout the county.  They were all located using GPS technology.  FEMA covers areas around bridges.

Old Business:

*      Suggestions were made for rain garden and rain barrel lecturers.  January and February were the suggested months for this type of guest speaker.

*      Bob Bar was suggested along with Shareen Wagley

*       Water quality testing and education about storm water runoff need to be addressed

*      Madison County has a water quality partnership. There are quarterly meeting for minimum control measurers.

*      June was suggested for storm drain marking.

*      Nomination of officers: 

President:                    Crist Blassaras

Vice President:            Kevin Kenyon

Secretary:                    Judy DeLury

Treasurer (for life):    Kim Rodgers-Hatfield

*      Christmas Committee:  Kim, Sheryl, Alan and Sue Kilburn agreed to be on the Christmas Committee. 

*      We should encourage adopt-a-river:  Rick Griner agreed to drum up support from the City of Anderson employees.  They may adopt River Bend to Raible or Baxter.

*      Robert F Kennedy Jr. will speak February 18, 2009 at Ball State in Muncie.

*      There is no report on the West trail.

*      Kevin discussed the need for a Fall Creek Clean-up.

*       We discussed clean-ups on small target areas. The WRW may even do preventative clean-ups using community service individuals?

*      We should look into more grant funding.

The meeting was adjourned as the library was closing.
